A Mindful Year

I am toasting to a year of mindful living, having recently watched the Netflix documentary Minimalism. It reminded me of what I’ve believed for years, even if I live it out imperfectly, in fits and starts: happiness lies in intentional living.

There Are No Endings

“…there are no endings, only pauses when we look for new beginnings once again.” ~Grace E. Easely These words to a poem I read and memorized years ago always come back to me when I get to the end of something. I think Grace Easely hit upon a genius idea when she realized that every…

Before I Die

If you haven’t heard of the Before I Die Wall, the idea started with artist Candy Chang of New Orleans, LA. A close friend of hers had died unexpectedly, prompting her to think about all the things she would regret not doing, if she were to die then. In response, she created a mural that…

Travel Diaries: Washington

I finally realized why it’s taken me a year and a half to write the last few posts about my Summer 2013 road trip across the United States: every time I thought about my drive through the Western states (which are the ones I haven’t written about yet), I was overwhelmed by the feeling of…

Travel Diaries: Nevada

I’ve been on the road for only 3 days and I’ve already been in 5 states: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Idaho! The nature I have seen thus far is so beautiful that it defies description. You can check out my pictures  at this link. I hit the desert soon after getting on the I-15…

Fiery Love

Wow, it’s already May! The older I get, the faster time seems to go by. I have so much going on in this season of my life and I’m trying hard to keep up with it all. I’m in the middle of writing my 2nd poetry book (my first one is called The Book of…

The Pursuer

In celebration of love, I submitted the following extremely short story (140 words) for the Burning Love Contest at the MikChiks blog. Thought I’d share it with you, too. _____________ Thilo begged for English conversation lessons. Nina consented, little suspecting he was mad for her. It became evident after a month of conversations. Since he…

Becoming You

As a multifaceted creative, I’ve grappled for years with the idea of finding my voice. Often we find it hard to become the people we were meant to be because we grow up in environments that constantly compare us to each other. No two snowflakes are alike, yet no one ever says, “I like this…

Shapers

Today I’m thinking of three people who played a major role in shaping my life: my Dad, my high school art teacher and a high school music teacher. Certainly, more people have influenced my journey, but when I think of where I am today, I doubt that I would’ve been on this trajectory, if not…

POW: The Art of Non Conformity

POW stands for for Post of the Week–my most interesting online read of the week. Without a doubt, Chris Guillebeau is my most interesting read this week, even though the week isn’t quite over yet. With a website titled The Art of Non Conformity, how could he not be? Chris’ post on Getting Excited and…

Happy Reading!

My good friend, Sach, has been published at African-Writing.com. Way to go, Sach! I’m so proud of you.

Songs From a Bygone Era

A couple of weeks ago I watched a documentary on The Beatles’ first U.S. visit and loved it. I decided to see what all the hullaballoo was about since The Beatles hit and left the stage before my parents even got together! Really, their songs are just like country music–in the sense that they tell a…
